Bedroom design has been at the heart of my design business from the outset. They are one of the most personal rooms to design for a client. Free from public view, bedrooms should be a place of absolute comfort, beauty and solace. Bedrooms are my favourite room to design as they are such personal spaces. A chance for you to truly explore who you are and the feelings you wish to ignite in both the evenings and the mornings. Getting this space right, can induce greater relaxation, better sleep and invigorate you in the mornings, starting your day off in the right way, for you.
‘Bedrooms are not just spaces for rest; they are sanctuaries where dreams are nurtured, where the heart finds solace, and where the soul discovers itself’ - Lisa Post
The first step to creating a beautiful bedroom design, is figuring out the colour & style direction you want to go in. You might already have some clues from the other rooms in your home, but often your bedroom might require a different look and feel to the rest of your home.
You might love colour, but feel like going more neutral in your bedroom, perhaps craving a space that is free the usual busyness of your life. If your bedroom gets lots of natural light, it makes sense to make it feel fresh and airy through the use of warm neutrals. Or you might have a preference to make it darker, more cocooning or perhaps use a bright colour you would never dream of using in the rest of your home.
My goal when creating any bedroom design is to create atmosphere and connection. I always ask a set of questions that allow me to connect deeply with clients and their home. I also always look outside to the view so I can familiarise myself and connect with how the home fits within its environment. I worked on a design project in Armidale a couple of years ago. Paul Bangay (Australian landscape designer) designed the gardens, as such I connected my master bedroom design with the new flower bed Paul had created just outside the client’s bedroom window. It had a tall structure planted with lilac wisteria, underplanted with an evergreen ground cover with silvery green leaves and a raspberry flowering plant. The whole garden was stunning. This flower bed gave me my jumping off point for colours - silvery/sage green, lilac and raspberry.
Above you can see the visual mood board that I created for this bedroom design. I chose the fabric for the bedhead first; designers often refer to this first fabric as the ‘hero fabric’. Choosing this piece first offers you lots of colour options for cushions, curtains, trims and wall colours. Ensuring that your scheme is dynamic yet cohesive.

Lisa, your approach to bedroom design truly transforms spaces into personal sanctuaries! The detail in your mood boards and the connection to the natural environment make each project unique. I'm intrigued—how do you balance between current trends and timeless elements in your designs?
Gorgeous, love the insight Lisa, I really enjoying hearing about people's processes for doing their favourite things!
